Why Hazendal is the perfect family outing destination

Silly season is around the corner! If you are getting ready to spend some quality time with family and friends, you may be on the lookout for some kid-friendly destinations to add to your holiday line-up.

May we present 5 excellent reasons to put Hazendal at the top of that #FestiveFun list:

1. It’s an easy drive

Listen, if you’re headed anywhere with kids, the number one rule is to keep the drive short and sweet. That whole ‘are we there yet’ thing is not just a funny meme, it’s REAL and it will drive you around the literal and figurative bend.

So, if you like your nerves unfrayed, and the vibe nice and chill, choose a short-drive outing.

This is one of the reasons why Hazendal is so popular with parents and family groups in general. Depending on Cape Town traffic, you can make it to the farm, which is situated in the Bottelary area, in as little as 30 minutes from the CBD.

Coming from areas like Paarl and Stellenbosch will take between 20 and 40 minutes. From Worcester and the Breede River Valley, you’re looking at 90 minutes. In short, it’s central and convenient, which is also nice if you have people coming together from different locations.

TOP TIP: Packing car snacks? Keep it on the dry (i.e. non-smearable) end of the spectrum. Nuts, dried fruit, air-popped popcorn, etc. These things can be vacuumed up and/or dusted off. Drinking yoghurt, ice cream, and bubblegum, on the other hand, not so much.

Also, don’t underestimate the magic of the jammerlappie. Wet wipes are great but expensive and also very bad for the planet (it cannot be recycled at all!). Instead, take along a wet cloth in a plastic container or reusable ziplock bag and use it to wipe up spills.

2. We have snacks!

Speaking of snacks, once you arrive at the farm, we are ready to feed you in style! The Babushka Deli offers a range of family-friendly meal options that include tasty-yet-healthy kiddies' options. Remember to pre-book so you can be sure of a table upon arrival.

Plus, there are Babushka picnics on offer as well. Enjoy the outdoors while the kids run around  - it’s a great option for groups with very active youngsters who don't really like to be confined to a table. This whole set-up is ready prior to you even arriving.

On the other hand, groups with older tweens or teens might love to partake in a Russian Tea Ceremony with all sorts of dainty snacks. We also have the Pivnushka beer garden which includes a kid-friendly menu. If there are over-18 foodies on your crew, they might even be into the Sensory Experience, which is truly spectacular.

3. There are activity options for EVERYONE

When we say activity options for everyone, we do mean everyone.

First of all, Wonderdal is there to provide kids between the ages of 5 and 13 with an amazing (supervised) two-hour-long edutainment experience. This means parents can pre-book a time slot, book in their kids and then collect them again 2 hours later.

If you have ever tried to explore a wine farm with toddlers and tweens in tow, you’ll know that this is literally every parent’s dream come true. Plus, it’s super secure, so you don’t need to worry about your kids’ safety at all.

However, if your kids are a little older, they might enjoy putt-putt at the Kleine Hazen Putting Park, a session at the driving range or even a full-on golf game on a world-class par-3 course. Naturally, this golf portfolio also appeals to grownups ;)

Art lovers can explore Marvol Gallery (and the art and interior of The Homestead, if unoccupied), car enthusiasts can get an eyeful of an astounding collection of classic vehicles and then, of course, there is the wine! A wine tasting at Hazendal will not only introduce you to our lovely vintages, but teach you more about our singular terroir.

4. All weather conditions are catered for

The Cape Town weather is notoriously fickle, so it’s nice to have a destination that works come rain or shine.

On rainy days, visitors can stay undercover at the Burrow Driving Range, Wonderdal, the Russian Tea Room, Wine Lounge and the Marvol Gallery. On sunny days, the golf course, lawns, endemic gardens and the rest of the estate await exploration.

So it’s a win-win no matter which way the Southeaster may be blowing on the day you decide to visit.

5. You can book a private occasion at Hazendal

If you would like to celebrate a milestone birthday or other big occasion at Hazendal, our team can assist you in putting together a great event.

We host everything from weddings, to kitchen teas, bachelor parties, kids’ parties and more, so reach out if you have something specific in mind, and let’s make it happen!

We also offer exclusive-use onsite accommodation at The Homestead, so family units of up to 10 people can stay over in style.

See - how amazing does that sound? Come and join us for summertime fun at Hazendal this festive season; it’s the simplest way to ensure that everyone enjoys a fun (yet amazingly hassle-free!) time. Plus, you know, there’s wine.
