Choosing the ideal Western Cape wine estate to visit when you’re in the mood for a gorgeous outing can be a bit of a tough call. After all, there are so many fantastic spots to visit in the Winelands (how lucky are we?)!
So, to help you narrow down your options, and tempt you to visit Hazendal on your next Stellenbosch excursion, we thought we’d intrigue you with a few lesser-known facts about our wine estate. Here goes!
1. Hazendal is on the Original road from CPT to Stellies
When you visit our farm, the road that brings you into the estate runs along the very first highway that connected Cape Town to Stellenbosch back in the day. In fact, the Homestead used to be a convenient stopover for passersby and had attic rooms furnished for this purpose.
An extensive historical study was undertaken to learn more about the premises when we recently restored the Homestead to make it as period-authentic as possible- right down (or is it up?) to the thatch roof.

2. This used to be wheat country!
Once upon a time, Hazendal was a grain farm for a while - the stone donkeys by Angus Taylor in our restored threshing circle pays homage to this period of the farm's history.
‘Bottelary’ is the Dutch word for pantry on a ship. We are situated in the Bottelary area that used to stretch far wider than it does today - it used to encompass the hinterland all the way to Malmesbury. As such, this region used to be the pantry of the nearby colony, growing wheat and barley. Vineyards only came into the picture later.
3. We like to keep things sustainable
The Hazendal team is serious about sustainability. This includes investments in infrastructure solutions like solar panels, a borehole and grey-water irrigation; as well as the considered custodianship of natural wetlands that form an integral part of the farm's greater ecosystem which is home to many birds and floral species.
4. There is a full-on farm-to-fork vibe happening
In the same vein, we also prefer to keep the carbon footprint on our fresh produce as low as possible. This is why we are proud to be the keepers of our own on-site Harvest Garden - a highlight of the estate and a celebration of the farm's 300-year agricultural heritage. Think bountiful beds of vegetables, herbs and 21 species of edible indigenous plants, encircled by orchards of fruit trees, all of which supply the estate kitchens daily.
5. Culinary options abound
If you like to plan your wine farm visits with eats in mind, step right up. Hazendal ups the ante with everything from a beer garden and deli, to gourmet picnics, an on-site food truck and a full-on Sensory Experience.
6. Art lovers will be enthralled
Besides the Marvol Gallery on the estate that showcases local and international art, there are currently two original Trechikovs hanging in the Homestead, as well as two Pierneefs!
7. Our estate is also a great option for rainy days
Our Wine Lounge has a beautiful copper fireplace that we light in winter - just perfect for those overcast winter days when you want to sip on something tasty and take your time about it. Wonderdal is also the ideal solution for parents who are on the look-out for an indoor entertainment area where their children can learn as they play.
8. It's perfect for golfers of all ages
Speaking of youngsters - our newly built golf course is not just for adults. Once we open to the public, Kleine Hazen adventure putting park will also have courses for kids to play and a jungle gym and giant chess. In short, the perfect all-day family outing.
9. You can totally have a Russian Tea!
A Russian tea ceremony is something that everyone should experience at least once in their lives. The opulence! The drama! The deliciousness! It’s absolutely swoon-worthy.
So, while we know that you probably aren’t on your way to a wine estate to enjoy a fancy cuppa, we would definitely recommend that you consider it as an add-on to your outing. These lavish events are hosted in the elegant Avant-Garde space, where hand-painted murals and crystal chandeliers evoke the grandeur of Russian nobility.
