The Cape region is synonymous with wine, after all, it is not called the Winelands for nothing. Paarl, Franschhoek, Somerset West and Stellenbosch, in particular, have some of the best wine farms and vino in the world.

It’s also here that you will find Hazendal Wine Estate. One of the oldest wine farms in the Bottelary Hills, just outside of Stellenbsoch, the estate has a long, rich history of winemaking and is renowned for its finely crafted wines that express the unique coastal terroir from which it hails.

As no visit to the area would be complete without a wine tasting at Hazendal, we thought we’d compile a handy list of everything you need to know about wine tasting at the estate specifically to ensure your visit is perfect from start to finish. So get ready to swirl, sip and spit in high style at Hazendal!

Everything You Need to Know About Wine Tasting at Hazendal Wine Estate

1. Bookings are Essential

First things first, it is highly recommended that you book a wine tasting slot in advance to avoid disappointment. Hazendal is also transitioning into a reservation-only estate, so going forward bookings will be required for all visitors.

A deposit of R65 per person is payable upon booking. Bookings will be kept for 30 minutes only, whereafter the booking and deposit will be forfeited.

2. There are Set Wine Tasting Slots

Hazendal offers daily wine tasting sessions (apart from Mondays when the estate is closed). Visitors can choose one of three slots when booking:

  • 11:00 – 12:00
  • 12:30 – 13:30
  • 14:00 – 15:00

3. The Estate Produces Three Distinct Wine Collections

Hazendal produces three wine ranges, each unique in its own right.

Christoffel Hazenwinkel Range

Christoffel Hazenwinkel Range

Named after the estate’s founder, Christoffel Hazenwinkel, this range consists of three easy-drinking everyday wines.

Crafted for connoisseurs, the estate’s flagship range consists of complex wines with a dominant fruit character.

Limited Releases

Limited Release Wines

Hazendal’s single-varietal Carignan wine is truly something special. Bold and expressive, the red is voluptuous and elegant and pays homage to its Spanish routes.

The Christoffel Hazenwinkel and Estate Range, as well as the estate’s 23.5 MCC Blanc de Blanc and Blanc de Noir, are available for tastings.

4. There are Three Wine Tasting Options

Guests to Hazendal can choose between one of three wine-tasting menus:

  • A selection of any three wines, R65
  • Three Christoffel Hazenwinkel and three Estate wines, R95
  • A selection of any six wines, R130

In addition, there are cheese and charcuterie boards available for snacking. These range in price from R95 - R175 each.

Guests can also choose to buy food from the Hazendal Food Truck, Babushka Deli or Pivnushka Beer Garden. Picnics can also be arranged.

5. Wine Tastings are Hosted in the Wine Lounge

Tastings are conducted in the estate’s chic Wine Lounge. Set in the original cellar building, which dates back to the 1870s, the space is a beautiful fusion of old and new - the perfect setting in which to experience the estate’s wines, which fuse tradition and innovation.

6. Tastings are Guided by Wine Ambassadors

Each Hazendal wine tasting is led by a skilled Wine Ambassador. These expertly guided tastings will take you on a journey from vine to wine as ambassadors share information about Hazendal’s wines, terroir and winemaking philosophy.

7. There’s Also a Sensory Food and Wine Pairing Experience

Apart from traditional wine tastings, Hazendal also offers a sensory food and wine pairing experience in the estate’s subterranean Wine Library.

The gourmet experience is approximately two hours long and includes a glass of MCC on arrival, a guided tour of the state-of-the-art cellar and a wine tasting accompanied by micro-plates of culinary delights (view the full menu here) created by Executive Chef Michélle Theron.

The exclusive experience can only accommodate 14 guests at a time and reservations are essential. The tasting costs R680 per person and is only available from Tuesday to Sunday at 12:30.

8. The Wine Library Can Be Booked for Private Functions

The Wine Library tasting experience can be booked on an exclusive-use basis. It is a wonderful option for a family celebration or corporate event and makes for a truly unique and memorable affair.

9. You Can Also Book a Wine Tasting at Pivnushka Beer Garden

A local take on traditional European beer gardens, Pivnushka Beer Garden on Hazendal Wine Estate also offers a unique wine tasting experience. Here, guests can taste four of the estate’s wines (or locally crafted beers) in a relaxed al-fresco setting together with delicious bites from the beer garden’s kitchen.
