Summer in the Cape Winelands is a thing of beauty. The days are long and balmy, the vibe is festive, and there is so much to see and do! It’s no wonder local and international visitors flock to Cape Town and its surrounding Winelands over the summer holidays each year.
Here are 15 amazing things to get up to in Cape Town and the Cape Winelands this year:
1. Paint ceramics in the city
If you and your crew like getting up to creative things, Clay Cafe in the City could very well be right up your alley. This awesome location allows you to choose from 180+ ready-made items to paint and decorate while lounging under a sea of hanging plants. Plus, they have great tapas, cocktails and mocktails! It’s great fun for all ages, and provides the ideal opportunity to unleash your inner child and have some crafty fun.
2. Go on a kayaking adventure
Experience the Mother City from a brand-new vantage point by signing up for a kayaking excursion. Out there on the water, there are views for days and you get to breathe in some amazingly fresh salty air while you get a bit of exercise to boot. Atlantic Outlook Aventures offers a variety of kayaking experiences, including one that combines a kayak ride with a tandem bike trip down the Prom!
3. Make some art with the kiddos
Artjamming™ is an amazingly fun way to make some art in a space where you don't have to clean up after! It's great fun for kids and adults alike, and you get to play around with awesome materials that would be pretty pricey if you had to buy it yourself, but are made available to you at a fraction of the cost at this great venue. Plus, they offer Art Camp for kids over the holidays. Email firstname.lastname@example.org to learn more.
4. Visit the penguins
A visit to Boulders Beach is one of those classic Cape Town must-do activities. The Boulders penguin colony is world-renowned (there’s even a Netflix movie about it!), and these little African penguins are just too cute for words. It makes for a very fun outing for adults and a great ‘teachable’ experience for kids - it’s the ideal time to chat about conservation, etc.
5. Get golfing
Golfing is fun for the whole family, especially if you head to a destination like Hazendal, where you have access to a world-class, par-3 course, a state-of-the-art driving range and a fantastically fun putting park. With all this available on one estate, there is a level of golfing for everyone to enjoy - come rain or shine! This is especially to know on days when Cape Town forgets it’s summer and throws you for a rainy-day loop in the middle of the holidays.
6. Go bonkers for berries
Polkadraai Farm near Stellenbosch is synonymous with strawberries and a great spot to go strawberry picking over the summer holidays. Fill up a container or two to take home and perhaps enjoy a lingering lunch at the kid-friendly restaurant on site before you head home. A great way to spend a day with the littles!
7. Make a picnic of it
On days when the weather is just mind-blowing, there’s nothing quite like a picnic - especially if you don’t have to pack it yourself or organise all the bits and bobs you need to enjoy one.
At Hazendal, Babushka picnics can be enjoyed on the spacious shaded lawns, at one of our pre-booked picnic areas situated in the gardens or alongside the lush wetlands. With streams to splash in, outdoor sculptures to explore and gardens to discover, the Babushka picnics are ideal for families and friends to spend the day relaxing on one of the Cape’s oldest wine estates.
8. Get a gorgeous garden fix
A stroll around a lovely garden is a balm for the soul. If you like to get an eyeful of amazing greenery and learn a whole lot about indigenous South African plants to boot, Kirstenbosch gardens deserve a spot on your must-visit list. The grounds are expansive enough to enjoy whole day exploring, and there is a lovely tea room as well.
9. Try amazing (eco-friendly) chocolate
Never trust a person who does not love chocolate, we always say. These holidays, taste the most wonderful fair-trade chocolate at De Villiers Chocolate at Spice Route Destination. It’s also a great place to pick up last-minute festive gifts, of course...
10. Enjoy a Russian Tea Ceremony
Every now and again, you have to get a little fancy. When the mood strikes this festive season, we highly recommend booking a Russian Tea Ceremony at Hazendal. Sit down to an amazing array of dainty delicacies, sip tea and even add some bubbly to the mix if you prefer. Tres chic!
11. Braai on Paarl Mountain
Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve is a beautiful place to go for a hike - you can even summit if you like! Plus, they have great braai spots where you can park off for the day, make a fire, whip out a grid and spend some time in nature with the fam, off the grid.
12. Enjoy a Sensory Experience
Fine dining is all good and well, but when last did you go for a Sensory Experience (with capitals!). Enjoy an exclusive journey into the wines of Hazendal with a cellar tour and tutored wine-pairing experience in our elegant subterranean Wine Library. Each wine is paired with a flavour-packed micro-plate, showcasing the contemporary flair that is evident across the estate’s culinary offerings.
13. Go for a Couple's Experience
It’s been a YEAR, folks. If you feel a little frazzled and frayed at the edges, and know that your partner does as well, it might well be time to book a Couples Experience at Lyftaal Beauty Spa in Paarl. This bonding treatment features steam mud-exfoliation, followed by a relaxing back, neck and foot massage.
14. Book the kids for edutainment & enjoy 2 hours to yourself!
Listen, we all dearly love our children but the holidays are LONG. So, if you get to the point where you really need a few hours to yourself, bring your kids to Hazendal, book them in at the (super safe!) children’s paradise that is Wonderdal and take some time for yourself. Enjoy an uninterrupted meal, look at some art or just sit in silence - the choice is yours!
15. Segway through a vineyard
Yes, you can 100% board a Segway and go on a vineyard tour these days. What a time to be alive! Find out more about these fun experiences here.
Now you know! Best of all - five of these experiences can be enjoyed in one place. Hazendal offers a variety of amazing encounters for the whole family to enjoy this festive season.
